Born May 8, 1953 in Camazi in the Gisagara Commune of Cankuzo Province, Bishop Joachim NTAHONDEREYE has been in office as Bishop of Muyinga since March 1, 2003. He was promoted to this rank while he was a member of the diocesan clergy of Ruyigi where he had assumed the function of General Treasurer from September 1982 to August 1988 after having experienced exile in Tanzania from 1972 to 1980. He had then spent two years teaching theological ethics at the Major Seminary of John Paul II of Gitega after having obtained the degree of Doctor in this discipline at the Alphonsian Academy of Rome and taught there from 1996 to 2000. Since taking canonical possession of the Diocese of Muyinga, he has assumed within the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Burundi (CECAB) the function of President of the Episcopal Commission for Economic and Social Affairs until December 2016. Appointed on March 1, 2012, by Pope Benedict XVI, Consultor of the Pontifical Council for the pastoral care and health, he held this position for 5 years until March 1, 2017. Meanwhile, on December 10, 2016, he was elected President of Conference of Catholic Bishops of Burundi, a position he holds until today.
